THE POWER PLATFORM

“Your platform is only as strong as the common good you produce with it.”

It's Always Bigger Than Me

I have been extremely blessed to attain professional success at a young age. At 35, I have climbed the professional ladder and led several teams in the workplace, co-owned three businesses, founded a nonprofit, and managed clients that range from elected officials to well-known agencies.  While I attribute much of my success to my own hard work and grit, I will never deny the power of relationships and the role that mentors, friends, and colleagues have played in my progression. And because so many have paid it forward with me, I have committed a great deal of my professional life to using my platform to inspire others and provide pathways to help them attain success. That’s what The Power Platform is all about. How are you using your platform to benefit others?

What’s In A Platform?

As a black woman and former journalist turned marketing and communications strategist, I have always had to be “on”,  if that makes sense. From an early age, I was told that “you never know who is watching.” For the first few years of my career, I leveraged that saying to guide my personal and professional behavior so that I could excel. However, the more I became exposed, the more the saying took on a new meaning for me. Yes, I still believe that “you never know who is watching”. But I no longer allow that to box me into this “prim and proper” mold of what and who a leader should be or use it to only demonstrate how much I deserve a seat at the table. At the end of the day, the ones who grant me a seat aren’t the only ones “watching”.  There are people who are watching me and relying on me to lend my authentic self to the conversation – just as I needed mentors and colleagues to lend their authentic selves. There are people who are watching me and the position that I take on issues that matter. Issues like poverty and the wealth gap in America. Issues like microaggression, racial, gender, and social equity. Issues like health and wellness. And as a survivor – issues like domestic violence.

My passion for amplifying the impact of my work beyond financial gain is anchored in my faith and the belief that God places us here to give of ourselves when and where we can. I’m looking for others who are powerful in their spaces and have made the decision to do more and be more to someone else.
